General Medicine

Clinical examinations and instrumental examinations

If in this age group you are still followed by the Pediatrician of Free Choice, between 11 and 14 years it is good to undergo a final health check before passing on to the General Practitioner for the correct transmission of all health information that concern your childs.

When the first sexual experiences begin, we advise you to go to the Youth Space of the Family Counseling of your ASP to receive free information on sexually transmitted infections, on the available contraceptive methods (from condoms to the pill) and on the prevention of unwanted pregnancies.

Important information! The Family Counseling Center is FREE and accessible even by adolescents not accompanied by their parents, who will not be informed of your request for information for the PROTECTION OF YOUR PRIVACY. Therefore, let him advise you strongly, do not waste the possibility of asking for information and help for an aware and safe sexual growth!

Vaccinations

In this age group the vaccination schedule prepared by the Ministry of Health (Italy) includes the following vaccinations:

• HPV vaccine (two doses during the 12th year of life)

• recall of the vaccine against diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis-polio IPV (from 11 to 18 years of age, depending on the regional calendar)

• vaccine against measles-mumps-rubella (if subject "susceptible", because it did not have even one of the 3 diseases or was not previously vaccinated with 2 doses)

• ACYW135 tetravalent antimeningococcal vaccine (as a 2nd dose in case of subjects already vaccinated in infancy or as a recovery in case of subjects never previously vaccinated)

• varicella vaccine (if susceptible, because it did not have the disease or was not previously vaccinated with 2 doses)

• seasonal flu vaccine in women during the II-III trimester of each pregnancy

• pertussis vaccine in women during the third trimester of each pregnancy (ideally around the 28th week).

From 0 to 16 years, vaccinations against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae b, measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (this only for those born from 2017 onwards) are mandatory, including subsequent recalls foreseen by national vaccination calendar.

Cancer screening

For this age group there are no programs for the early detection of tumors with scientific evidence of efficacy.

However, I would like to recommend, those who are familiar with tumoral pathologies to pay proper attention to their health and protection, because this could make a difference during your growth.

Nutrition and nutrition education

A varied and balanced diet, containing all the nutritive principles and a healthy and active lifestyle from childhood are predictive of better health conditions in adulthood.

The pre-adolescent and adolescent age is a period of profound physical, mental and behavioral changes.

The need for energy and some nutrients (eg iron, calcium and vitamins) increases and nutrition must be able to bring all that is necessary for growth.

Girls in this age group have an increased need for iron, so it is necessary to increase the consumption of iron-rich foods.

It is important to follow a varied and balanced diet, containing all the nutritive principles, avoiding drastic diets (or "do it yourself") that can be particularly harmful for a balanced bone and reproductive development.

It should also be remembered that at this age both excess body weight and excessive thinness can profoundly affect emotional well-being and physical health, so both should be avoided.

Preventive and therapeutic physical training

The patterns of regular physical activity that you will acquire during this age group are more likely to remain so even in adulthood and will thus provide you with the basis for an active and healthy life.

L Participation in games and other physical activities, both at school and during leisure time, will help you to control body weight, will have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system and on respiratory functions and will contribute to a healthy development of the muscular apparatus.

Therefore, practice as much physical activity as you can!

The constant practice of physical exercise will help you to achieve an adequate level of bone mass, and this will contribute to your healthy growt.

Sport, physical activities and games in general, and even more as a team, are opportunities for interaction and social integration. If you are shy, overcome your shyness and launch into the sport you like best. You will see that you will benefit from it on several fronts!

My recommendation is that up to 17 years you should practice at least 60 minutes a day of moderate-vigorous physical activity and exercises to strengthen the musculoskeletal system at least 3 times a week.

From 18 years upwards the same recommendations as for adults apply, ie a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic physical activity per week or a minimum of 75 minutes of vigorous activity plus exercises to strengthen the major muscle groups 2 or more times per week.

Start now to build your strong and beautiful body!
